Golf is a very old sport and the exact origin remains unclear. Some claim that golf was invented by the Romans in the first century after Christ. They played “Paganica ‘, this was played with a curved stick and a leather ball stuffed with feathers. Others suggest that the origin of golf is to be found in the Low Countries.

The Dutch word ‘Kolven’, the French and Belgian ‘Chole’ and ‘Jeu de Mail’ and the English ‘Cambuca. The first traceable data on golf definitely goes back to the Netherlands, to Loenen aan de Vecht. Steven van Hengel describes in his book “Early Gulf” that in 1297, at the Kronenburg Castle, colf or kolf was played. In Naarden, one remembers the Colfstreet and in Leiden, the Kolfmakersstreet. Nevertheless, the most accepted theory of the history of the game of golf is that golf developed in Scotland around 1100 AD. Scottish shepherds struck rocks in rabbit burrows, on the very spot where the famous St. Andrews Golf Club is now located.

Golf has evolved from a simple farming game into one of the biggest sports industries in the world. Lots of people are now playing golf and golf courses emerge like mushrooms, with billions of Euros in handling.
